School History

Ellington is located 15 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne and is a picturesque rural community which is made up almost exclusively of private housing. Until recently it was home to the last working coal mine in the area, which has now been closed and demolished.

The nearby village of Cresswell lies on the beautiful Northumberland coastline that extends to the historic towns of Warkworth and Bamburgh and the Island of Lindisfarne. The coastline has the most magnificent castles, beaches and scenery.

The school crest, which was designed by a former pupil, depicts the main features of the area and reflects the importance of the school at the heart of the community.

There has been a school in Ellington for 156 years. The original building is now the village library. To serve the ever growing population a new school was built in 1976, which soon proved to be too small and remodelling and extension work took place in 1986. It was at this stage that the nursery accommodation was added which facilitated the later provision of the Foundation Stage Unit.

The school consists of the Foundation Stage Unit for children from 3-5 years ( Nursery and Reception), a Key Stage 1 Unit for children from 5-7 years (Years 1 and 2) and a Key Stage 2 Unit for children from 7-9 years (Years 3 and 4). We also have a well equipped hall/dining room plus a staff room and offices. There are 2 mobiles in the school grounds which are used essentially for community use. One of them acts as a changing room for the school’s floodlit multi use games area (MUGA) which is the most recent addition to the school’s community facilities.
